7 <br />11/13/72 <br />Dear Board Members: <br />Attached hereto please find the Application and Declaration ,for <br />Retirement of the above name firefighter, who wishes to make his <br />retirement effective November 16, 1972. <br />Appointed On May 1, 1943, Firefighter Vigh has completed twenty- <br />nine (29) years of service on the South Bend Fire Department. <br />His birth date is November 26, 1908. <br />John has served long and well on this department, but due to his <br />physical condition I would recommend at this time that his <br />retirement be granted, which I trust will meet with your approval. <br />Respectfully submitted, <br />JRB/ss s/ Jack R. Bland, Fire Chief <br />attachment <br />Upon motion made, seconded and unanimously carried, the Board <br />accepted the recommendation of the Chief and granted the retirment <br />of John S. Vigh, Jr., as of November 16, 1972. The Clerk was in- <br />structed to write to Firefighter Vigh expressing appreciation for <br />his long years.of service to the community. <br />POLICE DEPARTMENT: <br />Chief Seals appeared before the Board and matters pertaining to his <br />department were discussed. <br />The Chief presented the following letter: <br />November 8, 1972 <br />Board of Public Works and Safety, <br />County City Building <br />South Bend, 1-ndiana <br />Gentlemen: <br />As you are aware among the primary goals of this Department for <br />the first twelve months of this Administration was the upgrading <br />and updating of educational effort necessary to make available to <br />the City all possible police expertise in every facet of Police <br />Department responsibility. Not the least of such responsibilities <br />are those involved in preparing for the possibility of Management <br />Considerations in Civil Disorders, Bombing, Assaults on Officers, <br />Hijackings and Natural Disasters. <br />Therefore, we respectfully request that you approve the registration <br />of and attendance by Division Chief Donald P. Foy and Captain Henry <br />Kruszewski of a course in the above subject to be convened by the <br />Southern Police Institute located at the University of Louisville, <br />Louisville, Kentucky, between the dates of December 4 and December <br />15, 1972. Total cost will amount to $7.10.00 not inclusive of <br />transportation costs which will be minimal and provided for through <br />existing funds within this -Department. <br />The above approval is most earnestly recommended. <br />Respectfully submitted, <br />s/ Robert W.
