REGULAR MEETING
. JUNE 231, 1975
A regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was convened at
9:30 a.m, on Monday, June 23, 1975 with all members present.
Deputy City Attorney Kathleen Cekanski was also present. Minutes
of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved.
BID AWARDED - WIDENER LANE SEWERS
The Board received the following recommendation:
"Gentlemen:
We have reviewed and tabulated the bids received for the
Fellows -Widener Sewer Project. Based on their low bid
of $102,564.75, we would recommend that a contract be
awarded to Marion Hamilton & Son, Inc.
It should be.noted that the bid exceeds the amount used to
determine the assessments by less than $300.00. On the surface,
this means that the City will be.required to absorb in excess
of 50% of the cost of this sewer. However, the final cost.
will be based on field measurement of what is actually
installed on the project and may easily vary (either more or
less) in excess of $300.00. Therefore, it is our recommendation
that the contract be awarded and in the event the cost exceeds
$102,280, that the City absorb this cost.
Very truly yours,
s/ Rollin E. Farrand, Director
s/ David A. Wells, Manager
Bureau of Design and Administration
Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the recommendation was
approved and the bid was awarded.
REQUEST TO ADVERTISE FOR BIDS ;JHITE-WATER-WAY AND ISLAND PARK
The Board received a request from Patrick McMahon, Manager of the
Bureau of Public Construction, to advertise for bids for the White
Water Way and Island Park. Plans and specifications have been
prepared and are on file. Upon motion made, seconded and carried
the Board approved the recommendation and directed the Clerk to
advertise for bids, with bids to be received on July 23, 1975.
REQUEST TO ADVERTISE FOR BIDS DEMOLITION OF TURNER BUILDING
Mr. Farrand noted that when the City purchased this property, the
sellers, Landmark of Indiana, were given an option to repurchase part
of the property. They have advised the City that they do intend
to exercise that option. In accordance with the terms of the
purchase agreement, the City is now requesting permission to
advertise for bids for the demolition, the cost of which is to be
divided proportionately. Upon motion made, seconded and carried,
the Board authorized the Clerk to advertise for bids for the
demolition of the Turner Building. Bids will be received on
Tuesday, July 8, at 1:30 p.m.
MRS. WANDA HUMMEL RE: PARADE REQUEST
A request from ABATE to hold a parade of motorcyclists on Sunday,
June 29 to the Main Post Office in South Bend was denied by the
Board on June 16 because the participants planned to ride without
helmets and because the Captain of the Police Department Traffic
Detail had recommended the request not be approved. Mrs. Wanda
Hummel was present and submitted another request to the Board to
approve the parade. Mrs. Hummel said if it was necessary to get
approval, they would wear their helmets. She noted that the Police
Department could not provide an escort for the parade and said the
1
1
