REGULAR MEETING DECEMBER 19, 1977
is kept but would not apply if the hose had been damaged in any way. Mr. Brunner
said the Board was not advised that the lifetime guarantee would apply to
workmanship and material for as long as the City retained hose and said he would
request that that information be submitted in writing. Mr. Mullen said he
understood the interest of the Department in wanting to purchase bilateral hose
but, with the inflation rate, the frozen tax rate imposed by the Governor and
the overall budget picture for 1978, he felt the Board would have to agree to
Purchase less than the "Cadillac" in the field and would go along with the low
bidder. Mr. Dickman said if his firm was awarded the bid he would not want the
Fire Department to have the impression they were accepting less than equal hose
and said his product did meet all specifications. Mr. Fredericks noted that the
hose Midwest bid was 800 pound test as opposed to 600 pound for the other hose.
Mr. Dickman stated that the specifications called for 600 pound test hose.
Mr. McMahon noted that the requirements for rating fire hose are not high and
said it was his feeling that one failure in hose would justify the additional
expense. Mr. Brunner then said the Board is very cautious about accepting other
than the low bid. He said the Board was concerned with the quality, of the product
purchased and would watch its performance closely. The Department will be asked
to keep records of the hose performance for future reference. Mr. Mullen made a
motion to accept the bid of Tri-State Fire and Rescue Company to provide fire
hose at $1.27 per foot for 12' hose, $2.10 per foot for 22' hose and $2.69
per foot for 3" hose. Mr. Brunner seconded the motion and it carried, with
Mr. Brunner and Mr. Mullen voting "Aye" and Mr. McMahon voting "Nay".
BID AWARDED - CURB AND SIDEWALK CONTRACT
John E. Leszczynski, Manager of the Bureau of Public Construction, reported
to the Board that the bid received for Curb and Sidewalk Repairs, Contract II
from Rieth-Riley Construction Company, had been reviewed and he recommended that
the Board accept the bid for improvements on Clayton Drive, from Miami to Echo,
Coral Drive from Byron Street to Oakdale Drive, St. Joseph Street from Jennings
Avenue to Klinger Avenue and the intersection of Klinger and Addison at a total
cost of $58,562.50. The bid from Rieth Riley Construction Company was the only
bid received. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Mullen and carried,
the Board approved the recommendation to accept the bid of Rieth Riley Construction
Company.
REOUEST TO PURCHASE CITY -OWNED LOT AT 1814 S. ST. JOSEPH STREET FILED
The Board received a request from Viola Taylor for information regarding the
possible purchase of a city -owned lot at 1814 S. St. Joseph Street. Upon motion
made by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Mullen and carried, the request was filed
and referred to the Bureau of Engineering, the Park Department and the Redevelopment
Department for review and a determination as to whether the lot should be retained
for any purpose.
CANCO QUARTERLY REPORT FILED AND PAYMENT REQUEST APPROVED
In compliance with the contract between the City of South Bend and the Child
Abuse and Neglect Coordinating Organization, a report of services rendered for
September, October and November was submitted to the Board along with a request
for a quarterly payment under the contract of $2,500. Upon motion made by Mr.
McMahon, seconded by Mr. Brunner and carried, the report was filed and the
payment request was approved and will be forwarded to the Deputy City Controller
for payment.
FILING OF PETITION TO VACATE VARIONS STREETS - BENDIX CORPORATION AND BLANKENBAKER
The Bendix Corporation and Blankenbaker Associates file a petition to vacate
Illinois, Kenmore, Falcon, Iowa and Kentucky Streets, from Ardmore Trail to
Prast Boulevard. The petition is being filed in connection with a proposed
commercial development in the area. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded
by Mr. Mullen and carried, the petition was ordered filed and referred to the
Division of Engineering for preliminary review and a utility check.
