330
REGULAR MEETING AUGUST 20, 1984
about emergency vehicles having to back -out in order to get out
of the alley. In conclusion, she stated that no good purpose
would be served in vacating the proposed alley.
Ms. Dorothy Berndt, 730 Bronson Street, South Bend, Indiana,
advised that the residents use the alley for placing their cars
behind their properties and the closing of the alley would make
it very difficult for them, especially in the winter.
Mrs. James Foster, 639 1/2 River Avenue, South Bend, Indiana,
voiced her concerns about the use of the alley by the trash trucks
should the alley be vacated and further stated that the people of
the area do use the alley frequently.
Councilwoman Ann Puzzello addressed the Board and advised that she
would like to see the Board do what's best for the greatest number
of people and in this case residents will be "locked in" and the
alley will be too tight. Further, there is a parking problem on
Bronson Street which would complicate use of the Bronson Street alley.
Mr. Robert C. Wade, 655 River Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, was
present and advised the Board that because of the illegal parking
on Bronson Street, the closing of this alley would be an incon-
venience for the residents of the area and he objects to the
vacation.
There being no one else present wishing to speak either for or
against the proposed alley vacation, upon a motion made by Mr.
Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. Hill and carried, the Public Hearing
on this matter was closed.
Mr. Hill stated that in light of the comments heard today, the
recommendations of the various departments, the diagram and
survey submitted to the Board and the current photograph supplied
by Mrs. Beck, it is his recommendation that the Board make a site
inspection, look at the situation, and hold on making a decision
until that can be done. Further, he recommended that this public
hearing be continued until Monday, August 27, 1984 in order to
give the Board an opportunity to look at the alley and actually
view it firsthand. Therefore, upon a motion made by Mr. Hill,
seconded by Mr. Vance and carried, the Public Hearing on this
matter was continued until August 27, 1984, in order to give
Board members an opportunity to conduct a site inspection of the
proposed alley to be vacated.
PUBLIC HEARING AND RECOMMENDATION - APPLICATIONS FOR CERTIFICATE
OF PUBLIC CONVENIENCE AND NECESSITY FOR THE OPERATION OF TAXICABS
Mr. Leszczynski advised that this was the date set for the Board's
Public Hearing on applications for Certificates of Public Con-
venience and Necessity for the Operation of Taxicabs received from
the following individuals:
Walter E.
