1232 <br />REGULAR MEETING <br />JUNE 4. 1984 <br />Mr. Leszczynski further advised that letters were received from <br />Illinois Truck & Equipment Company, 7128 Barry Avenue, Rosemont, <br />Illinois and FTI Fire Trucks, Inc., 80 North Rose Street, P.O. <br />Box 647, Mt. Clemens, Michigan, indicating that they are unable <br />to bid on the above equipment at this time. <br />Upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. Vance and <br />carried, the above bids were referred to the Fire Department for <br />review and recommendation. <br />STATUS REPORT CONCERNING RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE EAST RACEWAY <br />Jim Seitz, Superintendent of Public Parks was present at the meet- <br />ing and gave the Board a status.report concerning recent.develop— <br />ments in the east raceway project. Mr. Seitz indicated that on <br />May 31st a slab in the raceway did move but there was no displace.-.. <br />ment. However,_a small crack was noticed. Mr. Seitz stated that <br />the City has been drilling core holes in the raceway to relieve <br />hyrostatic pressure and that water and sand have come up through <br />the holes. Board members were further advised that the engineers <br />and architects were notified of this recent development and asked <br />to determine the cause. Additionally, an outside consultant, Mr. <br />Lawrence DuBose of Chicago, Illinois, will be looking at:..the <br />situation. Mr. Seitz indicated that for now, the June 29th <br />dedication date of the raceway is on "hold". <br />Mr. Leszczynski advised that these recent developments are a <br />result of the City putting the race through the most severe paces <br />so that when it is open to the public it will be completely safe. <br />He further stated that underground conduits or "flumes" might be <br />the cause of some of the problems recently experienced and efforts <br />are being made to determine the cause. Mr. Hill stated that <br />Lawson -Fisher Associates, engineers, will be providing some <br />specific recommendations and those recommendations will be <br />reviewed as to whether they will resolve the problems. <br />In conclusion, Mr. Seitz advised that he will keep Board members <br />informed of the status of the east raceway project. <br />PUBLIC HEARING AND RECOMMENDATION - ALLEY VACATION - NORTH/ <br />SOUTH ALLEY BOUNDED BY WASHINGTON, MAIN, JEFFERSON AND MICHIGAN <br />Mr. Leszczynski advised that this was the date set for the Board's <br />public hearing on a proposed alley vacation described as the north/ <br />south alley bounded by Washington Street, Main Street, Jefferson <br />Street and Michigan Street. <br />It was noted that this public hearing is being held in order for <br />the Board to submit a recommendation to the Common Council concern- <br />ing the Petition filed by the South Bend Redevelopment Commission., <br />1200 County -City Building, South Bend, Indiana, for the vacation of <br />this alley. <br />There being no one present to speak either for or against the pro- <br />posed alley vacation, upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, <br />seconded by Mr. Hill ana carried, the public hearing on this <br />matter was closed. <br />Mr. Leszczynski advised that comments have been received from the <br />Engineering Department, Area Plan Commission and the Community <br />Development Department regarding this vacation. Based on those <br />recommendations, upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded <br />by Mr. Hill and carried, the Clerk was instructed to forward to <br />the Common Council a favorable recommendation on the above.referred <br />to alley vacation subject to the dedication of additional right-of-way <br />for an east/west access between Main Street and the north/south <br />alley in question and subject to any and all utilizy easements. <br />1 <br />1 <br />1 <br />
