REGULAR MEETING
JUNE 13, 1988
of the Board a map of the area and
children wait for buses and where
because of cars losing control at
indicated the areas where
damage has occurred to property
the curves.
Mrs. Mary Short, 206 Devonshire, also addressed the Board and
stated her concerns regarding the traffic situation at Bercliff
Estates. Mrs. Short stated that she has observed cars running
the stop signs and recounted for the Board the number of cars
that have come into her yard as well as damage done to the
property of other residents in the area. She asked the Board to
please consider lowering the speed limit to 20 MPH. She stated
that with the completion of the Logan Street widening project the
problems will still continue as people will continue to use
Bercliff Estates as a shortcut to McKinley.
Mrs. Mary Firtl, 229 Wildemere Drive, advised the Board that she
is the acting President of Bercliff Estates and that Wildemere is
a very busy street. She stated that residents have stopped
taking walks in the neighborhood because of the increased traffic
and some have almost been hit by cars. There are thirteen (13)
children in the neighborhood and there are no sidewalks. In
addition to the problem of numerous vehicles speeding through the
subdivision, residents have experienced trash and bottles in
their yards.
Mrs. Short again addressed the Board and stated that perhaps it
would be a good idea to have a police car sit in one of the
residents driveways in order to catch motorists violating the
speed limit and running stop signs.
Mr. Leszczynski advised those present that he agrees with the
concerns raised by the residents as he too is a resident of
Bercliff Estates and has experienced some of the problems
mentioned by residents. Mr. Leszczynski advised the residents
that he will have the 30 MPH speed limit signs removed but it is
his feeling that if the stop signs are being ignored the speed
limit signs will also be ignored. He stated that what is needed
is more police protection and the residents agreed.
Mr. Leszczynski further stated that it is his opinion that once
Logan Street is opened some of the problems will be eliminated.
When Logan Street was in a state of disrepair, motorists utilized
any other street in order to avoid having to drive on Logan. He
also informed those present that the City would install chevrons
at the curves and corners so motorists will not be driving onto
private property.
In response to an inquiry of whether the installation of curbs
would help, Mr. Leszczynski advised that the installation of
curbs would hamper storm drainage.
Residents also advised the Board that there are Watch for
Children signs on Sylvan Glen and at 35th Street that are in need
of replacement. They also advised that the sign at 35th street
should be moved to be more effective.
In conclusion, Mr. Leszczynski reiterated that he will have the
30 MPH speed limit signs removed and have chevrons installed at
the corners and curves. He also advised the residents present
that a traffic study will be conducted which would reveal if a 20
MPH speed limit is warranted. He advised that a previous study
on Oakcrest and 35th Street did not meet the necessary warrants
for a reduced speed limit. Mr. Leszczynski further stated that
the Board will request that the Police Department step up patrols
in the area.
Therefore, upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by
Mrs. DeClercq and carried, the request to consider the lowering
of the speed limit in Bercliff Estates was referred to the Bureau
of Traffic and Lighting and the Police Department Traffic
Division for review and recommendation.
