F .' ~ .. <br />REGULAR MEETING APRIL 4, 2007 <br />APPROVE RECOMMENDATION FOR EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH -FEBRUARY 2007 - <br />PATROLMAN PAUL STRABAVY <br />Chief Fautz stated that Patrolman Paul Strabavy was selected as Employee of the Month for <br />February, 2007. The award is to recognize officers, civilian employees, on the South Bend Police <br />Department who have demonstrated actions noted by supervisors or citizens from both a professional <br />law enforcement position and in support of the community policing efforts with citizens of South <br />Bend. Chief Fautz noted this officer was instrumental in seven felony arrests, four misdemeanor <br />arrests, and several warrant arrests. There being no further discussion, a motion was made to approve <br />the recommendation by Ms. Dempsey, seconded by Mr. BonDurant and carried. <br />ACCEPT AND FILE DONATION TO SOUTH BEND POLICE DEPARTMENT <br />Chief Fautz advised the Board of a generous donation made to the South Bend Police Department <br />K-9 Unit by Shazon Miller in the amount of $795.00. The money is to be used to purchase a ballistic <br />vest for the new patrol dog. There being no further discussion, the donation was accepted and filed. <br />FILING OF MONTHLY STATISTICAL ANALYSIS REPORT -FEBRUARY 2007 <br />Chief Fautz noted that crime was down from this time last year by eighteen percent. President <br />Rodriguez indicated that unless there were questions or objections by members of the Boazd, the <br />statistical report for the month of February 2007 as submitted by the Police Department would be <br />accepted for filing. There being no objections, the following report was accepted for filing: <br /> Feb Feb YEAR TO DATE <br />PART I OFFENSES 2006 2007 CHANGE 06 07 CHANGE <br />MURDER 0 1 + 1 0 2 + 2 <br />RAPE 6 6 0 13 13 0 <br />ROBBERY 18 15 - 3 61 49 - 12 <br />AGGRAVATED ASSLT 23 18 - 5 40 35 - 5 <br />BURGLARY RES 109 73 - 36 260 169 _ 91 <br />' <br />BURGLARY NON RES 30 18 12 71 49 22 <br />LARCENY 282 210 72 600 525 75 <br />MOTOR VEH THEFT 38 39 + 1 94 89 - 5 <br />ARSONS 4 5 + I 12 9 - 3 <br />GRAND TOTAL 510 385 - 125 1151 940 - 211 <br />FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />ACCEPT AND APPROVE RETIREMENT/DISABILITY -JEFF POLANSKEY <br />Chief Taylor submitted to the Board a Declaration of Retirement/Disability for Engineer Jeff <br />Polanskey, effective March 30, 2007, stating that at this time there is no suitable or available work <br />within the Fire Department for him. On January 25, 2007, Engineer Polanskey was seen by his <br />doctor, Dr. Yount, and it was his recommendation that Engineer Polanskey be put on a Disability <br />Pension. This request is in accordance with I.C. 36-8-5-2 (g). Dr. Vickie Wipperman, the Medical <br />Director for the South Bend Fire Department saw Engineer Polanskey on January 31, 2007 and <br />agreed with Dr. Yount's recommendation and placed him on limited duty, with no active Fire <br />Suppression activities. On February 7, 2007, the South Bend Fire Department local Pension Board <br />approved the request and submitted the paper work to PERF for their review. On Mazch 29, 2007, <br />PERF contacted the South Bend Fire Department with an approval of Firefighter Polanskey's <br />disability on Mazch 30, 2007. Therefore upon a motion made by Mr. Alford, seconded by Mr. <br />Cottrell and carried, the Retirement/Disability as outlined above, was approved. <br />PRIVILEGE OF THE FLOOR <br />President Rodriguez thanked Chief Taylor for his dedication and leadership in the Fire Depaztment <br />and for his work with the Boazd of Safety and wished him the best in his retirement. Mr. Cottrell <br />stated that he has seen great changes in the Fire Department in the years he has been with the Boazd <br />of Safety, brought on by Chief Taylor's leadership. All Board Members thanked and congratulated <br />Chief Taylor in his retirement, and wished him the best. <br />
