Also present were
Board Attorney Thomas Bodnar, Police Chief Thomas Fautz, and Fire Chief Luther Taylor.
The meeting was held in the Board of Public Works Meeting Room, 13~h Floor County City
Building, South Bend, Indiana.
Board members discussed the following item(s) from that list:
- Correction to the Minutes
Mr. BonDurant stated that on page four of the minutes, the first item under the Police
Department stating Division Chief Eugene Kyle is retiring in good standing for the last
thirty-five (35) years and sixteen (16) days, should include the words "after serving".
- Filing of Monthly Statistics -Police Department
Chief Fautz, Police Department, noted that the statistics for November for murder,
aggravated assault, and burglary are finally going down. He stated that burglaries are
down due to the apprehension of some key suspects committing numerous robberies in
the area. Chief Fautz stated that crime rates in general are up 12% which is average for
Midwest cities of comparable size. He credited the Disarm Task Force for doubling the
number of guns taken off of the streets. Chief Fautz noted that aggravated assaults are at
an all time low compared to the last ten to fifteen years.
- Voluntary Demotion -Fire Department
Chief Taylor, Fire Department, stated that the voluntary demotion was the personal
request of the firefighter who currently serves as Battalion Chief in the Bureau of Special
Operations to return to his previous duties as a Captain in Fire Suppression.
- Promotion -Fire Department
Chief Luther Taylor, Fire Department, stated that the promotion request was due to the
' voluntary demotion request and the need to fill the spot left open as a Battalion Chief in
the Bureau of Special Operations. Mr. Bodnar, Legal, stated that due to the recognition of
the promotion by Mayor Luecke, there was no motion needed to approve the promotion.
- Additions -Fire Department
Chief Taylor, Fire Department, requested the Board to add a letter of revision to the
original Recruit Hiring letter submitted in December. The letter requests that two of the
recruits be allowed to defer from the recruit class, and attend the next class in 2007.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the Board, President Rodriguez declared the
meeting adjourned at 8:27 a.m.
~-~ BOARD OF PUBLIC SAFETY
1
Donald L.
