If you have a dumpster, you likely need an enclosure.
What is a Trash and Recycling Enclosure?
Components of an Enclosure
A trash or recycling enclosure is a structure built to hold dumpsters and other large refuse con-
tainers (36 cubic ft. or more in capacity). These enclosures improve aesthetics and contain trash
spillovers and leaks. (See Section 21-06.02(f)(27) in the city’s Zoning Ordinance for all of the details.)
• A three-sided solid wall (NOT a fence) that is similar to the design and materials of the main
building and goes to grade
• An opaque gate to access the enclosure (NO chain link with slats)
• A row of shrubs around the wall
What if...my dumpster is on an alley and you can’t see it from the street?
You may not need to meet the normal material or landscaping
requirements, or need an enclosure at all.
What if...you can’t see my dumpster from the street because it’s in the rear or side yard?
You may be able to build a fence instead of a solid wall, as long it
goes down to grade. You also might not need landscaping.
Please contact the Zoning
Administrator to discuss
these alternate options.
