The EPA confirmed that LaSalle Park has been fully remediated and is safe for public use. An environmental covenant is in place to protect the site and prevent disturbance of remediated soil. In the Becks Lake residential area, EPA testing found two (2) properties with elevated lead levels, both of which have since been remediated. The EPA also plans to hold a community meeting this fall to provide information, answer questions, and engage with residents about the completed work. Council President Canneth Lee said the update was reassuring and highlighted the need for clear, factual communication from responsible agencies. “It was reassuring to hear directly from the EPA about the steps taken to ensure proper remediation. As a Council, we want residents to receive accurate, factual information as we continue building trust in our community.” — President Canneth Lee, South Bend Common Council The Council will continue supporting transparency and community engagement as additional updates become available, with a focus on ensuring residents have accurate information about environmental health and safety. ###
