The full presentation is on file in the Office of the City
Clerk.
Mr. Perri stated that the South Bend Parks Department is a member of the Indiana Parks and Rec
Association, and a part of the NRPA, and we're one of 130 park systems in the country that is
CAPRA Accredited, which puts us in the top one (1) percent of the country.
There are four pillars of a parks system. The first is health and wellness. If you live within ten,
(10) blocks of a park, you're fifty (50) percent less likely to see an ER visit, and more than
eighty (80) percent less likely to be obese. The second is social equity. The parks program in
South Bend has made sure that people have equal access to programs and all of the recreational
amenities. You'll see that our sixteen (16) park facilities are well spread out over the City.
Conservation is the third pillar, and it is very much up to the parks system to lead in this area.
We haven't put a lot of focus in this area in the past, but environmental sustainability and the
protection of our natural resources is pretty important and I think we can add a new level of
sophistication to the way we treat our parks.
