JOSEPH COUNTY, August 18, 2015 — In honor of the Indiana Bicentennial the
state will be having a Torch Relay, modeled after the Olympic Torch Relay and one of
the signature events for the statehood celebration. This 2,300 mile trek throughout the
state of Indiana will begin in Corydon, the first state capital, on September 9, 2016 and
end in Indianapolis, on the statehouse grounds, on October 15, 2016. The torch will
travel through all 92 counties for 5 weeks and carried by approximately 1 ,800
torchbearers. The Torch Relay has been created to commemorate Indiana's 200th
birthday, inspire Hoosiers, and unify the state's neighborhoods, communities and
regions.
"Being selected as an Indiana Bicentennial torchbearer is a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity for Hoosiers," Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann said. "We look forward to
honoring Indiana's history while also optimistically looking forward to the future during
this momentous event for Indiana."
The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay aims to honor those Hoosiers who demonstrate
exceptional public service, achievement, acts of heroism and volunteer service to their
neighborhood, community, region or state. St. Joseph County is seeking 26 torchbearer
positions. The deadline for the torchbearer nomination application is December 31,
2015.
