He said he has always championed quality
of life issues for neighborhoods. The "Mow to Own" concept, he said, could result in more attractive,
welcoming neighborhoods helping to enhance property values as well. Henry said he modeled the
proposal after a similar successful program in Memphis. Basically, the program would encourage
neighbors of vacant and abandoned housing to mow weeds and generally care for a property with the
prospect of acknowledged state legislation may be necessary to fully implement the proposal; but that
should not dissuade us from trying.
Chris Huff and Jesse Davis both spoke in favor of the proposal with the caveat that it would have to be
well thought out and closely monitored.
Dr. Fred Ferlic and Dr.Varner both spoke in favor of the concept. Derek Dieter motioned favorably.
Karen White followed and all affirmed.
Before adjourning Derek allowed Assistant Fire Chief James Lopez to speak. James talked about the
torch relay passing through the City next October celebrating the 200th anniversary of Indiana's
statehood. He went to provide a handout(attached)describing the torch relay.
Derek Dieter adjourned the meeting at 5:15 P.M.1 s Re y^N itte J
4.
Derek Dieter, Chairperson
Health & Public Safety Committee
1
