Y
Common
South Bend
NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
October 15, 2014
Contact Henry Davis, Jr.
Email hdavis(cDsouthbendin.gov
Phone: 315-4112
Public Safety Forum
(South Bend, Indiana) A couple of weeks ago we witnessed the video tape footage
which showed a South Bend resident, Tom Stevens, who was beaten by a police
officer. This video is extremely disturbing and could occur anywhere in our nation.
Many people in our community and around our country have witnessed or experienced
a similar act directly or indirectly and it must end. I will continue to monitor this issue
closely, and I hope our Mayor will take issues of police misconduct seriously and
address them appropriately.
I am working with several community-based organizations to address these issues. We
will begin our second of a series of community hearings this Thursday, October 16,
2014 at Dulous Chapel, located at 608 S. St. Joseph St. starting at 6 pm.
I will be moderating this public safety forum. Our specific focus is the issue dealing with
the Mr. Tom Stevens occurrence and more importantly working to install a Citizens
Review Board which will give our citizens the ability to serve in a decision making
capacity.
Here in South Bend we have participatory government and it works most effectively and
efficiently when all members of the community are involved. Please join me for this
important event; together South Bend we can make a difference.
