REGULAR MEETING OCTOBER 27, 2008 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />rd <br />Panthers to a 23-3 record and led the team to their 3 state title championship game this <br />past basketball season, where she average a state-best 29.5 points per game; and <br /> <br /> Whereas, Skylar Diggins was selected to be a member of the 2008 USA <br />Basketball Women’s U18 National Team, a 12-member squad chosen after three days of <br />trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, and competed in the <br />FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women in July in Buenos Aires; and was also <br />strd <br />selected as a Parade 1 team and USA Today 3 team All-American this year. <br /> <br /> Now, Therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of the City of South <br />Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br /> <br /> Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the <br />Common Council hereby publicly commends and congratulates Skylar Diggins, a <br />Washington High School Senior for the many honors which she has earned in the <br />classroom and on the basketball court, and as her former Coach Marilyn Coddens stated, <br />Skylar is “so versatile, with an inside and outside game. She is so knowledgeable and <br />unselfish…and off the court she is a teacher’s dream.” <br /> <br /> Section II. The Common Council wishes Skylar Diggins continued success as an <br />outstanding academic student, as a gifted team leader of the South Bend Washington <br />Lady Panthers Basketball Team this season, and wishes her and her family the very best <br />as she is recruited by almost every major collegiate program in the nation. <br /> <br /> Section III. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its <br />adoption by the Council and approval by the Mayor. <br /> <br /> <br />st <br />s/Derek D. Luecke, Mayor of South Bend <br /> <br /> <br />Marilyn Coddens, Athletic Director, Washington High School, 61089 Fellows, South <br />Bend, Indiana, spoke in favor of this Resolution. She stated that it was truly a privilege <br />to coach Skylar who now is being coached by her stepfather Maurice Scott. She stated <br />that Skylar is an incredible competitor and one of the most versatile players on the court. <br />She wished Skylar all the best in the years to come and will miss her greatly. <br /> <br />Renee Scott, 1216 W. Colfax Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, stated that she is Skylar’s <br />mother. Ms. Scott thanked the Council for this honor. <br /> <br />Howard Buchanon, South Bend Fire Chief, 217 Swanson Circle, South Bend, Indiana, <br />spoke in favor of this Resolution. He stated that Skylar is an outstanding individual as <br />well as a talented athlete and student. <br /> <br />Skylar Diggins thanked the Council for this honor of athletics as well as academics. She <br />thanked Coach Coddens and her family for all their support. She stated that it was an <br />honor and a privilege to be acknowledged with Leroy Dickson on the billboard. She <br />stated that with hard work and dedication she would like to compete next year in <br />Thailand. <br /> <br /> 4 <br /> <br />
