Office of the Mayor

MEDIA ADVISORY
Friday, October 17, 2008
10:30 AM

Contact:
Mikki Dobski, Communications & Special Projects, 235-5855 or 876-1564; Sam
Hensley, Director of Streets, 235-7568

South Bend quick starts
2008 Operation Re-Leaf Pickup

The annual Operation ReLeaf program will officially begin Monday, November 3 in the
northeast quadrant of the City and continue clockwise around the city for five weeks, ending the
week of December 8, weather permitting.
In an effort to get a jump on leaf pickup, especially with the pleasant weather
expected over the next few days, residents may call 235-9244 for loose-leaf pickup during
the next two weeks. Crews will be dispatched to collect leaves Monday through Thursday,
the weeks of October 20 and 27 and will pick up piles in the order calls are received. They
will work all around the city on a strategic basis targeting those addresses that have called
in, for maximum efficiency. Residents are encouraged to call in this weekend, allowing
crews to mobilize first thing on Monday.
The purpose of this strategy is two-fold. First, it provides South Bend residents with the
fastest, most efficient leaf collection program possible. Second, it allows the City to be as
flexible as possible while ensuring the most cost-effective delivery of services to our residents.
As residents are aware, Northern Indiana weather can radically fluctuate. As a result, the City is
working with residents to help ensure a quick, quality cleanup.
-30-
