HEALTH& PUBLIC SAFETY JANUARY 23,2014 4:30 P.M. <br />Committee Present: Derek Dieter, Henry Davis (AB), Dr. Fred Ferlic (EXAB), Tim Scott <br />Other Council Present: Valerie Schey (AB), Dr. David Varner (AB), Oliver Davis (AB), <br />Karen White (AB), Gavin Ferlic (AB) <br />Others Present: Kathy Cekanski - Farrand, Terrance Jeffries (1426 Miner) <br />Agenda: 2014 Committee Priorities <br />Though there was not a quorum present in that only Chairman Derek Dieter and Councilmember Tim <br />Scott were present. Derek briefly reviewed committee activities in 2013 before engaging in a lively <br />exchange of ideas with Tim focused on 2014 priorities. <br />In no particular prioritization order the following topics were suggested for further discussion. <br />• Derek said Dr. Ferlic would like to promote a program to fight youth obesity. <br />• Derek said while it is a Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) union issue the Council should know <br />the number of officers assigned to the beats on all shifts. <br />• Tim said the Council should get an update on Police Department and Fire Department <br />efforts to employ technology to improve service and eliminate paper. <br />• Tim said the Council should get an update on the chronic nuisance ordinance <br />implementation. <br />• Both Tim & Derek thought an update on the state required 911 center consolidation was <br />needed. <br />• Derek wondered why the South Bend Tribune reported the Anti - Violence Task Force had <br />met with city leaders yet no Council had been contacted. <br />• Tim & Derek both saw a need for a follow -up on the whistle - blower ordinance. <br />• Tim thought the Prosecutor's office could use technology to schedule court time. <br />• Derek suggested the Council was due for a progress report on the fire training complex, <br />basically from Chief Cox. <br />• Tim said he was meeting soon with South Bend Police Department Officer Keenan to get a <br />Miami Hills and Beacon Heights status report then would schedule a follow -up with the <br />Miami Hills neighbors. <br />Midway in the discussion Terrance Jefferies, an interested citizen, wondered if he could get involved <br />mentoring youth. Derek said he would refer him to mentoring programs at Big Brothers & Big Sisters. <br />
