1 f
NEWS RELEASE
Date: Thursday, August 22, 2013, 3:15 p.m.
From: Derek D. Dieter, Council President Contact: 532-2200
City Council Receives Notice of Upcoming Meeting on Test Results on Beck's Lake
Notice was received today by the South Bend Common Council that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Charles Black
Sr. Recreation Center located at 3419 West Washington Street in the City of South Bend.
EPA representatives and health officers will discuss at that meeting the "sampling results and recent proposal of
the Beck's Lake site to the Superfund list". Preliminary information has revealed that "no immediate health
risk" has been found.
Because of the Common Council's Mission Statement:
"To make eertain that our City Government is always responsive to the creed
of our resident& that the betterment of South Bend is always our highest priority'.
we wanted the public to be aware of this important public meeting, which will be held next week.
Many Council Members have been contacted by members of the public regarding their concerns over potential
health risks in the Beck's Lake area.
Last June, the EPA took soil samples from the area and from the LaSalle park area. It is our understanding that
at least sixty-six (66) soil samples were taken at that time. Preliminary information from the EPA reports that
the area in question is to be placed on the National Priorities List some time this Fall. If that takes place a more
detailed investigation and clean-up may be possible under the Superfund law, as well as long-term planning.
On behalf of the entire Common Council, I urge all concerned citizens to attend next week's meeting. This
meeting will be a great opportunity to receive the most recent and up-to-date information available.
