Certificate of Appropriateness Application
Bess HouseSidePorch Renovation
Page 2
specific reasons. First, this wall will raise the panels up high enough to allow Mr.
Bess to use regular glass in the panels instead of more expensive safety glass that
would otherwise be required in panels that extend to the ground. Second, the
low wall will provide a place to install power on all sides of the porch, an option
that is not available to him currently.
Construction materials and details will be in keeping with the existing house.
The principal materials will be painted wood frame and painted wood siding
which was salvaged from the garage that once stood at the rear of the property.
Siding will be attached to a simple 2x4 frame which will either be left exposed
inside and painted or covered in painted beadboard. Existing brick piers, wood
posts, beams, and roof will remain as is, other than necessary repairs to rotted
joist ends in places around the porch - these will be patched to match the existing
profiles cut into their ends.
Finally, this renovation will require the removal and re-installation of two
painted wood trellises that are currently hidden behind screen panels. These will
be shifted forward and raised above the new low wall to make them more
significant elements in the appearance of this porch.
Please review the attached renderings for more information regarding this
renovation. I look forward to discussing the proposed work with you and
anticipate receiving a Certificate of Appropriateness soon. Let me know if you
have any questions or concerns.
Respectfully submitted,
John C. Mellor, AIA, LEED AP / John Mellor Design
C: Philip Bess, file
