The first is in-
kind repair of the existing water table, siding, and masonry. The masonry will be restored with salvaged
bricks that are original to the home. Approximately one-third of the rear siding is missing; this will be
replaced with in-kind cedar shingles painted to match that are on average 5 ½” wide with an exposure of 9
½". An existing rear door is situated in the center of the existing kitchen layout, to accommodate a more
functional spatial kitchen layout the rear door will be shifted by three feet, see drawn elevation depicted in
a dashed line for the existing door. The 10' water table (currently exposed concrete block) will be parged
with a new stucco. The stucco on the rear 2nd story wing will be repaired in kind as well.
The second phase will be the re-construction of a rear porch approximately 6' deep by 12' long. Demolition
of an existing rear wing conducted before the relocation uncovered an original rear porch shed roof that
was later extended (c. 1945). This along with other evidence on the rear wall indicated a porch existed in
generally the same location as the new intended proposal, as can be seen in the attached photograph
figure (1). The design is not a one-for-one replacement of the previous addition but is still done in a style
that is appropriate to the character of the home. The design utilizes craftsman motifs that occur around
the exterior of the home such as exposed rafters, beadboard soffit, and pilaster proportions, see figure (2).
The design also pulls on elements featured around the neighborhood, particularly the side porch shed roof
on house 605 Portage Ave, South Bend, IN 46616, see figure (3). The construction of the porch will consist
of a primary wood structure, that is supported on the front corners with concrete piers that are faced with
masonry brick that either has been salvaged from the existing supply or is sourced to closely match.
3
KH, $20.00 IOU from previous extra payment, Indiana Landmarks 4/17/2025
