throughout our country there will be celebrations and ceremonies honoring government <br />workers during "Public Service Week "; and <br />WHEREAS, events are planned by Federal State, local agencies around our country, <br />for these workers who are the backbone of our governments; and <br />WHEREAS, governmental workers include astronauts, custodians, accountants, <br />secretaries, park rangers, police officers, firefighters, attorneys, military <br />members, park department workers, street department workers, utility workers, elected <br />officials, and countless other dedicated individuals; and <br />WHEREAS, governmental workers at all levels of government have accepted the <br />challenge to provide the best and highest quality of service to their communities by <br />creating a governmental system which "work better and cost less "; and <br />WHEREAS, the Common Council believes it is a fitting and proper message to <br />continue to set a clear vision for not only our Country's future, but also our <br />Country's and City's future, as we continue to address our communities problems and <br />improve the quality of life. <br />Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, as follows: <br />Section I. The Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, hereby <br />declares the week of May 9, 1944 as "Public Service Recognition Week" in South Bend, <br />Indiana. <br />Section II. The Common Council recognizes that many, many unsung heros who work <br />on a day by day basis at all levels of government for the betterment of our <br />community, and our Country. <br />Section III. The Common Council challenges all citizens of the City of South <br />Bend to participate in this week of recognition and ask all government workers to <br />continue to set an example for our residents to emulate. <br />Section IV. Kernan, Mayor <br />A public hearing was held on the resolution at this time. Council Member Puzzello <br />made the presentation for the bill. She read the resolution. Council Member Coleman <br />made a motion to adopt this resolution, seconded by Council Member Zakrzewski. The <br />resolution was adopted by a roll call vote of eight ayes. <br />Council President Puzzello announced that Susan Cameron and Carolyn Ecker were <br />appointed to the Animal Control Commission. <br />REPORTS OF CITY OFFICES <br />Fire Chief Taylor presented a booklet to the Council covering the past 5 years and <br />future expectations for growth in the Fire Department. <br />Council Member Luecke made a motion to resolve into the Committee of the Whole, <br />seconded by Council Member Coleman. The motion carried. <br />COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend met in the <br />Committee of the Whole on May 9, at 8:20 p.m., with eight members present. Chairman <br />Kelly presiding. <br />BILL NO. 45 -94 A BILL OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br />APPROVING THE SALE OF PARK PROPERTY. <br />This being the time heretofore set for public hearing on the above bill, proponents <br />and opponents were given an opportunity to be heard. Council Member Washington <br />
