Chair Tomas Morgan clarified the dates for Walk the Walk Week. <br /> Gwen O'Brien stated that Walk the Walk Week will be from January 26, 2025, to February 1, <br /> 2025. <br /> Adam DeBeck added Holy Cross College and St Mary's College will be co-hosting an event <br /> inviting Danjuma Gibson to talk about his work at the intersection between leadership and self- <br /> care for Martin Luther King Day on January 14, 2025. <br /> Chair Tomas Morgan enquired about updates regarding the South Bend Tribune Building and the <br /> Holy Cross leadership for that project. <br /> Gwen O'Brien stated Notre Dame would occupy some of the space in the building, but the <br /> University wants to work with community organizations and partners to fill the space in that <br /> building. <br /> Adam DeBeck announced that Alex Hammel, the first Executive Director from Holy Cross, is <br /> leading efforts to gather community input on utilizing space. Hammel is currently developing a <br /> needs and services analysis, which will inform the creation of a community survey. <br /> Chair Tomas Morgan inquired about Alex Hammel's professional background. <br /> Adam DeBeck responded that Hammel previously worked as a manager for the Studebaker <br /> properties. Additionally, Hammel has collaborated with South Bend City Church, Purdue <br /> Polytechnic, and local charter high schools. <br /> Public Safety Officials Overview <br /> Fire Chief Carl Buchanon, based at 1222 South Michigan Street, South Bend, IN 46601, shared <br /> updates on recent and upcoming initiatives. The SBFD hosted a blood drive before Thanksgiving <br /> and will participate in the Toys for Tots event on December 7, 2024, at 6:30 a.m. The department <br /> is also collecting coats,hats,and gloves for the unhoused community and will serve as a designated <br /> drop-off site for these items. Chief Buchanon expressed gratitude to school representatives for <br /> their active engagement in the community and emphasized his commitment to maintaining open <br /> communication with students and faculty to promote safety. <br /> Sergeant Jarveair Bourn, located at 701 West Sample Street, South Bend, IN 46601, encouraged <br /> heightened community vigilance during busy shopping periods, urging residents to report <br /> suspicious activity. He highlighted the success of recent events, such as the Cops and Goblins <br /> gathering on October 29, 2024, which drew approximately eight thousand (8,000) attendees, and <br /> the Heroes and Helpers event in partnership with La Casa de Amistad, which ensured children <br /> received holiday gifts. The SBPD and Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge Thirty Six (36) <br /> recently reopened their officer recruitment program, receiving around six hundred (600) <br /> applications. The SBPD has several upcoming events to engage the community. The POW <br /> Program will take place on December 4,2024,at 210 Lincoln Way West at 6:00 p.m.On December <br /> 6, 2024, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., the department will host a free Cookies with Santa event at 701 <br /> West Sample Street.A Cops and Coffee session,providing a forum for open dialogue with officers, <br /> is scheduled for December 9, 2024,from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at 1013 Portage Avenue. Finally,the <br /> Monthly Crime Statistics Meeting will be held on December 11, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. at 701 West <br /> Sample Street. <br /> Neighborhood Representatives <br /> Pam Claeys, representing the River Park Neighborhood Association, announced a Christmas <br /> decorating contest and plans to apply for another IGNITE grant,with the previous one(1)funding <br /> vinyl photo wraps for signal boxes.
