The motion <br />ed on a roll call vote of nine ayes. <br />UTION NO. 2240 -95 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br />BEND, INDIANA, COMMENDING THE BETHEL PILOTS FOR WINNING THE <br />NAIA DIVISION II, NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 1995 <br />Whereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, enthusiastically <br />acknowledges that the Bethel Pilots Basketball Team won the NAIA Division II National <br />championship by a score of 103 to 95 in Nampa, Idaho; and <br />Whereas, the Common Council is proud to further acknowledge that the Bethel <br />Pilots finished the season with a record of 38 wins and only 2 loses, having set a <br />�-ollege School record with 16 straight victories; and <br />Whereas, the City of South Bend salutes Coach Mike Lightfoot and his entire <br />:oaching and managing staff along with all of the young men on the Bethel Pilots <br />Basketball Team for their fantastic team effort and excellence both on and off the <br />:ourt; and <br />Whereas, the 1994 -1995 Varsity Basketball Team included from South Bend: Chad <br />ohnson, Von Gilbert, Rico Swanson, Jody Goralski, Charles Harris, and other team <br />embers; Eric Hostetler, Sam Obermeyer, Randy Romer, Mike Miller, Mike McBride, Mark <br />alloway, Jeff Hobson, Jeff Clay, Mike Large, Jeff Zurcher, Jon Berger, Matt Wilson, <br />ason Groves, Eli Welch; Manager Alan Grzeskowiak; Athletic Secretary Nancy Snell, <br />ssistant Coaches Scott LaPlace and Todd Gongwer and JR. Varsity Coaches Robby <br />renkert and Chris Hess; and <br />Whereas, Coach Lightfoot's career record is now 235 victories and 65 loses and <br />with the NAIA Division II Championship, the Bethel College Basketball Class of 1995 <br />includes Mark Galloway, Jody Goraki, Sam Obermeyer, Mike McBride, and Chad Joston as <br />having all played on three (3) National Championships including two (2) NCCAA <br />Championship Squads in 1992 and 1993; and <br />Whereas, the Bethel College victory over Northwest Nazarene on March 14, 1995 <br />capped a storybook ending for the entire team, most of whom have grown up in the <br />South Bend and Michiana area. <br />Now, therefore, be it ordained by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, <br />Indiana, as follows: <br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, <br />the Common Council hereby publicly commends the Bethel College Basketball Team <br />proudly known as the "Bethel Pilots" for winning the NAIA Division II National <br />Championship by a score of 103 to 95. <br />Section II. The Common Council further commends Bethel Coach Mike Lightfoot and <br />his entire Coaching Staff along with all of the individual members on the Bethel <br />College Basketball Team for not only their athletic ability on the basketball court, <br />but also for their excellence as individuals off the court and being proven role <br />models to men and women of all ages. <br />Section III. The Common Council is proud to salute Bethel College, the Bethel <br />Pilots and all of the friends and families of the young men who have worked so hard <br />in bringing a National Championship home of our community. We salute each and every <br />one of you and hereby proclaim the week of May 8, 1995 as "Bethel Pilots National <br />Championship Week in South Bend, Indiana ". <br />Section IV. Council Member Coleman <br />read the resolution and presented it to Coach Mike Lightfoot. Coach Lightfoot <br />thanked the Council as well as the City of South Bend. He said this was more than <br />just a Bethel College championship, it belonged to the community because these are <br />local kids. Council Member Zakrzewski made a motion to adopt this resolution, <br />seconded by Council Member Slavinskas. The resolution was adopted by a roll call <br />vote of nine ayes. <br />
