REGULAR MEETING JANUARY 8. 1996 <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend <br />met in the Council Chambers of the County -City Building on Monday, <br />January 8, 1995, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order and <br />the Pledge to the Flag was given. <br />ROLL CALL Present: <br />Absent: <br />SPECIAL BUSINESS <br />Council Members Luecke, <br />Pfeifer, Kelly, Broden, <br />Varner, Zakrzewski, Coleman <br />Hosinski and Washington <br />None <br />Council President Kelly reported that the Council will be making an <br />appointment for a three year term to the Century Center Board of <br />Managers, as Joseph Burkus has asked not to be reappointed after <br />serving for many years. He indicated the Council will be accepting <br />resumes from people interested in serving on this Board. <br />REPORT OF CITY OFFICES <br />Fire Chief Luther Taylor gave an overview of the Fire Department's <br />Specialized Training in 1995. He gave the Council a report on <br />training, tactical rescue team, apparatus status and EMS. <br />Council Member Coleman made a motion to resolve into the Committee <br />of the Whole, and recess, seconded by Council Member Zakrzewski. <br />The motion carried. <br />COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE <br />Be it remembered that the Common Council of the City of South Bend <br />met in the Committee of the Whole at 7:15 p.m. with nine members <br />present. Chairman Washington presiding. <br />BILL NO. 62 -94 A BILL AMENDING THE ZONING ORDINANCE, AND <br />ESTABLISHING AN HISTORIC LANDMARK FOR THE PROPERTY <br />LOCATED AT 237 N. MICHIGAN STREET, IN THE CITY OF <br />SOUTH BEND, INDIANA <br />This being the time heretofore set for public hearing on the above <br />bill, proponents and opponents were given an opportunity to be <br />heard. Council Member Zakrzewski reported that the Zoning and <br />Annexation Committee had met on this bill and recommended it to the <br />Council favorable. John Oxian, president of Historic Preservation, <br />made the presentation for the bill. He indicated the hotel is <br />Renaissance Revival in structure, and was an example of commercial <br />structures that were built in South Bend in the early twentieth <br />century. Council Member Zakrzewski made a motion to recommend this <br />bill to the Council favorable, seconded by Council Member Coleman. <br />The motion carried. <br />BILL NO. 87 -95 A BILL TO VACATE THE FOLLOWING DESCRIBED PROPERTY: <br />THE FIRST NORTH -SOUTH ALLEY EAST OF SOUTH MAIN <br />STREET RUNNING SOUTH FROM WEST GARST STREET; AND <br />THE FIRST EAST -WEST ALLEY WEST OF SOUTH MICHIGAN <br />STREET RUNNING WEST FROM SOUTH MICHIGAN STREET <br />SITUATED IN THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, ST. JOSEPH <br />COUNTY, INDIANA <br />This being the time heretofore set for public hearing on the above <br />bill, proponents and opponents were given an opportunity to be <br />heard. Council Member Coleman made a motion to accept the <br />substitute bill on file with the City Clerk, seconded by Council <br />Member Zakrzewski. The motion carried. Council Member Varner <br />reported that the Public Works and Property Vacation Committee had <br />met on this bill and recommended it to the Council favorable, as <br />amended.
