4
The question also arose as to whether the Colfax Garage is open
when the Morris Civic has events. It has been reported that it has
been closed on numerous occasions. Mr. Huber reported that if they
knew it would be used on these evenings, they would stay open.
They would like to have a schedule. Mr. Dale Balsbaugh, Manager of
the Morris Civic, reported that a schedule is given regularly to
the Garage for this purpose. Mr. Huber reported that parkers tend
to park at the Marriott during performances. Council Member
Stephen Luecke posed the question as to whether there is a sign
posted indicating times for parking when there is an event at the
Morris. Apparently there are signs when the Garage is open
evenings.
Citizen Member William Eagen inquired as to why reports are given
at the Caucus meeting when it is too late to digest the
information. Mr. Rinard replied that they attempt to get it to the
Council Members in a timely fashion; but sometimes it is difficult
to compile the information before the Caucus meetings. Council
Member Eugene Ladewski mentioned that when Ampco took over the
operation of the Garages, they gave a cut in pay to the personnel
they re-hired from the former City Garages. Mr. Huber reported
that only two persons formerly working at the Garages refused to
accept positions with Ampco.
Council Member Slavinskas noted that the July revenue showed a
large boost in revenue. He assumed that this was from the Ethnic
Festival weekend. A special rate is given for this particular
event. Mr. Huber reported that he agreed that the Ethnic Festival
was most likely the reason for the July increase. Discussion
followed on the possibility of eliminating the first sentence in
Section I - E. It was decided to defer for now and discuss before
the evening's meeting. Council Member Slavinskas inquired as to
whether there are committed parking spaces. Mr. Huber answered
there are no committed spaces.
Council Member Luecke made a motion to send Bill No. 53-94 to the
Council favorably, seconded by Council Member Zakrzewski. The
motion carried.
The Committee then reviewed Bill No. 54-94, which is an Ordinance
appropriating $37,000.00 from the Morris Civic Auditorium
Improvement Fund. Mr. Dale Balsbaugh, Manager of the Morris Civic,
made the presentation.
Mr. Balsbaugh reported that $11,000.00 is needed for an Intercom
System, $12,000.00 needed for new drapery for the stage, $10,000.00
for new safety hardware for the fire doors, $4,000.00 for update
and expansion of the security system, and $8,100.00 for upgrading
of the heating system. Presently on big productions, it is
necessary to borrow from the University of Notre Dame. The drapes
have been there since 1950. Mr. Balsbaugh reported that it is
necessary that the fire doors be brought up to code and they have
been having problems with the ability to lock the doors properly.
