McBride
Contact: Bob Palmer, Council Attorney: bpalmer@southbendin.gov

DuComb Center Promotes Justice and Mercy
As President of the South Bend Common Council, 3rd District Representative,
and as Executive Director of the DuComb Center, an innovative work release
residential center in the City of South Bend, it is imperative to speak out
regarding justice, redemption, and rehabilitation within our community. These
assets combined are the facets of the organizational structure of the DuComb
Center program. The ultimate goal of this topic, sponsored by the St. Joseph
Community Library as part of the Community Read initiative, is to address
some of the unique programs implemented at the center, which bear fruit in
employment, education, and recidivism reduction. The book “Just Mercy”
focuses primarily on that work and illustrates the struggle against injustice in
the story of one of the activist lawyers, Bryan Stevenson. He is the Founder
and Executive Director of EJI (Equal Justice Initiative) and is a widely
acclaimed public interest lawyer who has dedicated a significant portion of his
life to helping the poor, the incarcerated, and the condemned. South Bend
resident Ms. Alicia Brown Wells will also be sharing her story. Ms. Brown
was incarcerated for four years but was able to overcome her drug addiction
and turn her life around and is now using her experience to help others. Council
President, Sharon McBride calls on citizen members and community leaders
to encourage the transformation of justice by supporting programs that
promote a second chance and assist people with becoming active citizen
members within our community. This topic presents a vision where the
impossible becomes possible and a unique opportunity for mercy and
redemption.
The public can view more information by following the link below:
https://sjcpl.libnet.info/event/6134780
###
Sharon L.
