HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
PRESERVATION SPECIALIST REPORT
February 16, 2015
Hello Commission!
I hope all of you survived the cold unharmed. Unfortunately it's not over yet, but
given time hopefully sooner than later.
Just a few points to touch on from last report:
-Since Indiana Landmarks' project, "Vintage Green" is already having both a .
lecture and workshop on weatherization it does seem a little redundant to offer
one as well. We will merely direct inquiries that way unless I am able to visit a
property and provide specific recommendations.
-I wanted to add a private walking tour I will be giving to some University of
Michigan students on March 2 for Unity Gardens. These students are spending
spring break helping out here. I was able to do this last year as well. Mitch at
Unity Gardens has been a speaker at one of our workshops and discussed
composting, so it seems a fitting trade.
-I will be presenting a lecture at the Studebaker National Museum on March 18th
at 1:30 on "Mansions" I hope those that can attend do so. I also hope to do this
great topic the justice it deserves. .
Alright, on to new business. HPC staff has contacted the Building Department in
.order to get some assistance with the local landmark located at 65014 US 31 S. The
former Country Bake Shop has been in disrepair for years and has now become a poster
child for demolition by neglect. We look forward to the assistance our enforcement arm
in the county will be able to provide us.
This evening I will be attending a meeting between Howard Park Neighborhood
residents and the Parks Dept to discuss what the local residents would like to see happen
with the park in the near fixture. I am hoping to make a case for an adaptive reuse of the
WPA building (former offices). I will report at the meeting the results.
I am hoping to yet this week have the dates, times, and locations confirmed for
the power tools workshop, and well as the tombstone information lecture and volunteer
days for the cleaning of the stones. Jeff from South Bend Monuments has offered to assist
me in the presentation on symbolism and physical material breakdown of the stones
themselves.
Thank you,
Steve Szaday
Preservation Specialist
HPCSBSJC
