HPC 40th Anniversary Strategic Planning
After the February 2013 monthly meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission, commissioners and staff re -convened
site, downtown South Bend, @ CJ's pub. Commissioners were there by 8:00 PM. No members of the public were
sent. Meeting began @ 8:15 PM.
Present were:
Catherine Hostetler [CH]
Elicia Feasel [EF]
Timothy Klusczinski [TK]
Jerry Niezgodski [JN]
Kevin Buccellato [KB]
Lynn Patrick [LP]
LP agreed to take notes – and send to those who were present for addition of any comments she overlooked
Please add your comments, if any, and send to those who were present
(Last night, LP suggested those send comments to her for integration – now in this dark morning before the approaching
winter storm, LP thinks it would be better if comments were added, and just sent to all- like some sort of 'chain minutes.7
- Meeting began with discussion on Commission history, funding [SB grant, attorney, car]
- EF - a list of what is palletized and for sale at the Ivy Tower
- City has control - items could be used or resold for funding
- Green drinks, sustainability
- 3 points for a bike rack and a shower / 3 points for an entire "green building" [uneven rewards]
- However, re -use of an existing building is the greenest building of all
- Micro consulting class @ Notre Dame
- Business plans, preservation and revolving loans
- CH "Then and Now" Tours, $2.00 per
- These would be different, new tour, spring boarding, integrating historic districts and ND - where coaches lived, etc.
- ND "Yellow Brick" tours
promoting SB - making connections
Meeting w/ND students, weekly, or more, connecting with Sue Solmos and Convention and Visitor's Bureau to create
fund
- Put on workshops, revolving funds, for users [public, private citizens] to buy equipment
TK - Must be for the DIY-er, because of EPA rules [i.e. lead, etc.]
a -Need to establish "tool crib" for paint removers, HEPPA vacs, etc.
EF - Making shift from creating landmarks to promoting and helping property owners to care for their buildings
CH- Sue Solmos thinks, many assets for selling South Bend, because, bar none, SB has best housing stock in the state,
cause of our connections w/Chicago, people availing themselves of the architects there, and using the $ from local
industry to build great structures
KB - S. St. Joseph Street - properties are amazing, one has oak -hand carved coal burning fireplace, for example, in
Taylor's Field,
TK - We need to channel buyers to these properties
-------------- ------- ----- —
EF -Some people own them, have for years; don't even live here; no incentive to maintain or sell these– — ------ --
KB - Any way to ID these properties?
TK - Get list of demos from Larry M [HPC atty]
EF - Window video, salvage in our storage room - all are not marketed
TK - Could we get a communication / marketing intern?
EF - Tried - no response
TK _ Budget
CH - could come from other areas
TK - Every effort - Tours / Outreach, marketing, have to generate $; $2 a head per tour won't do it
JN - Burkhart Advertising has a "gratis" program for non-profit... but we as are a govt. program - I'm thinking if we had a
program to focus on, they could help
- Grants program could help, little billboard is $800 for one month - gratis program = 4 boards, all free
- Neighborhood Resource Corp was accepted - we are going to do billboards, but Burkhart will work for you
- vintage sign, LW by Walnut Street - Whistle Stop - amazing it is still up
- Indiana Landmarks could do...
rkhart's, if a soldier dies in our market - we will do a memorial ad
But we have to partner with Indiana non -profits
LP – I have a free-standing sign on LW E and Arch, in a historic district, we could use, it is smaller, but free, for any sign
we might want to put up
