HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION 2012 <br />The Historic Preservation Commission was awarded the 2012 National Alliance of <br />Preservation Commissions "Commission Excellence Award" for Best Practices -Public <br />Outreach/Advocacy. This award was accepted by the Staff at Forum 2012 in Norfolk, <br />Virginia in August. <br />HPC developed the 2012 Then & Now: A `Downtown South Bend Walking Tour" <br />brochure and conducted the tours, often customizing them to suit different tour group's <br />focus. HPC developed with funding partners: South Bend, Neighborhood Resources . . <br />Corporation,- DTSB, Visited South bend Mishawaka, WNIT and Center for History the <br />Local Historic Districts of South Bend, Indiana Heritage Tour and brochure. There is <br />also a power point presentation of this Tour. Elicia Feasel, Assistant Director, directed <br />more than 1000 volunteer hours for the digitization documentation project of City <br />Cemetery at the Parks Department and also developed its preservation plan. <br />HPC developed and hosted Restore Michiana, a conference, workshop and lecture <br />series, with the hands on work shop in New Carlisle in May of how to repair and Paint <br />exterior wood siding. HPC also sponsored the debut of its Preservation and Maintenance <br />of Wood Windows package of 2 DVDs and Manual that was created with recognized <br />experts Richard Speigelmyer and John Partee. This is also available on You -Tube at the <br />Restore Michiana website <br />HPC held the presentation of the bi annual Southhold Preservation Awards in <br />Spring 2012 along with DTSB's Pride of Place Awards. <br />- HPC participated in Advocacy Campaigns such as the development of a <br />Studebaker/Bendix Heritage Trail, the development of a post card series highlighting St. . <br />Joseph County Landmarks and Scenes due to be published in 2013. <br />HPC provided additional efforts on behalf of local historic preservation by <br />coordinating the effort to digitize the endangered records of the Historic South Bend City <br />Cemetery, continuing to shepherd the Hubbard Haven National Register Nomination <br />through the review process in Indianapolis and wrote the Staff Reports and <br />Recommendations for the National Register Nominations of St. Patrick's Park and North <br />Liberty's Historic Commercial District. HPC also wrote letters of support for North <br />Liberty's Main Street application and for the grant to restore the PWA stonework in North <br />Liberty Park. Both were approved. HPC also supported the National Register <br />Nominations of the West LaSalle District and Sons of Israel Synagogue for South Bend. <br />HPC Preservation Specialist, Steve Szaday, along with Notre Dame Intern, Phillip <br />Dudeckcompleted a comprehensive survey of all 74 of the St Joseph County Landmarks <br />for compliance with the Minimum Maintenance Standards. They also created a form with <br />a diagrams and a letter to send to the owners. <br />HPC continued to reach out and partner with members and staff of Historic New <br />Carlisle; Main Street North Liberty and Walkerton Historical Society as well as DTSB <br />and Sell South Bend. Fostered closer relationships with Notre Dame, St. Mary's, IUSB <br />and IVYTech with HPC's Intern Programs. <br />HPC conducted 209 106 Reviews and acted on 94 Certificates of Appropriateness. <br />
