STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: December 8, 2009 <br />Application Number: 2009-1207 <br />Property Location: 1055 Riverside Drive <br />Architectural Style/Date/Architect or Builder: Prairie/1926/Gerber & Haley <br />Property Owner: Charles Leone <br />Landmark or District Designation: Riverside Drive LHD <br />Rating: I Outstanding <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: The house at 1055 Riverside Drive is a two <br />and a half storey brick square structure set upon a brick foundation. The walls are brick <br />in stretcher bond with herring bone brick panels in the main fagade. The hip roof is 12/12 <br />with large stuccoed, hipped dormers on each side all with asphalt shingles. The gutters <br />and downspouts are, copper. There is a sunroom on the east end and a French door entry <br />on the main fagade. The large French door style windows flank the entrance. The door is <br />a single leaf wood frame, flanked by sidelights and a segmental transom in a recessed <br />wood enclosure. The first floor windows are wood frame casements, the second floor has <br />6/1 double hung windows. There is a three car detached concrete block garage at the rear <br />of the house. <br />ALTERATIONS: The wooden exterior storms were installed over the leaded glass <br />sidelights of the front entrance in 1986. The aluminum storm doors noted on the 1977 <br />survey card were replaced in 2000 with COA 2000-0627-2. The surface of the driveway <br />was replaced with concrete brick with.COA#2006-0726. There have been various, <br />approved changes to the landscaping over the course of the decades; dying front yard <br />trees were removed in 1988. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Placement of a new tree, a black gum (Nyssa Sylvatica) in <br />the front yard of the property at the tree line, per the attached site plan. <br />DISCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The homeowner wishes to plant a black <br />gum -tree -in the corner of the -front -yard -by the drive way -and -sidewalk. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />B. BUILDING SITE, LANDSCAPING <br />AND ACCESSORIES <br />Individual properties .in the district are characterized by a house located in the center of a flat <br />lawn, often divided by a walk leading to the front entrance. Several of the residences are sited on <br />two or more building lots; however, the preponderance of the homes have been erected on a <br />single lot. Most of the properties include a double garage, usually located at the rear of the <br />property. The majority of garages are accessed from straight driveways leading from the main <br />thoroughfare, while a few are accessed from the alley. There are also a few <br />homes with a covered carport located at the rear of the property, as well as a few with circular <br />driveways. Driveway and sidewalk materials include concrete, asphalt and brick. All of the <br />
