edge: how it differs in campuses designed on monastic vs. village models, <br />focusing on how real engagement between town and gown involves shared <br />space and integrated planning. <br />3) Brian Kelly, is a consultant to Ayres Saint Gross and Professor at the <br />University of Maryland School of Architecture. He'll discuss town / gown <br />relationship on three campuses designed by Jens Frederick Larson (Colby, <br />Bucknell, and Wake Forest). Larson was one of the most active campus <br />architects in the 1930's -50's and literally "wrote the book" on campus planning <br />techniques, as Kelly says. <br />4) Kevin Clark, an associate with Historical Concepts, Atlanta. They are <br />planning a college town for Regency College on a nearby 30 -acre greenfield <br />site. <br />5) Milton Grenfell, founding principal of Grenfell Architecture and Bob <br />Chapman, developer. They will discuss Duke University. Duke's west <br />campus was envisioned as a college set off in a forest, rather on the monastic <br />model. The result is a blighted no man's land between Duke and the <br />surrounding city. Their work at Duke has been about changing this situation. <br />Bob will share the numbers end of things and the nuts and bolts of <br />development. <br />12:00 to 1:00 pm, Lunch break. Participants are on their own; although we hope to <br />have box lunches and pop available for sale. <br />1:00 to 4:30 pm, Bond Hall Auditorium <br />1) Alicia Berg, former Commissioner of Chicago Department of Planning and <br />Development and Vice President of Campus Environment, Columbia College, <br />Chicago. She will discuss incentives needed for businesses to get on board <br />with supporting a mixed -use development especially as it pertains to college <br />towns. She will describe how mixed -use developments improve the quality of <br />life of students, faculty and local residents, as well as leasing and <br />demographic issues. Hopefully she can also discuss UIC's development along <br />Halsted Street. <br />2) Cynthia van Zelm, executive director of the Mansfield Downtown <br />Partnership. An independent, non - profit organization charged with <br />coordinating the enhancement and revitalization of Mansfield's commercial <br />areas. Mansfield Downtown is a public - private partnership composed of <br />representatives from the community, business, town, and the University of <br />Connecticut. The group is actively involved the college town the University of <br />Connecticut is creating. <br />
