STAFF "PORT,
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Date: July 11, 2006
Application Number: 2006-0711
Property Location: 1138 E. Wayne Street
Property Owner: Virginia and Louie Anderson
Landmark or District Designation: E. Wayne Street LRD
Rating: S
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT: This 1935 Tudor Revival House was
owned by Hilda and Raymond E. Cloud. Raymond Cloud was co founder of Cloud Brothers, an electric
appliance store located at 902 S. Michigan. Jeanette and Maurice Herman, owners of a women's apparel
shop on South Michigan, also owned the house in the 1940s. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson purchased the house
in 1987 from David Bowers.
APPLICATION ITEMS: Add a 19'4"x12' irregular shaped (see Construction PlanAl and site plan)
screened -in porch onto the back of the house. The porch will be on a concrete slab foundation. The porch roof
and siding will match the roofing and siding on the main house.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval. The porch is being constructed off of a 15'x15'
1946 addition to the main house (See Assessor Card). The porch will tie in to the brick wall of the 1946
addition and the roof will tie in to that addition at the opening left by the removal of the air conditioner. All
materials will match the house and compliment its design characteristics. The fabric original house will not be
compromised.
