We would view designating the half block to our west as part of an historic district an
obstacle to our future potential growth and as a statement in contradiction of the support
we have had from the city in years past.
This coming year we will be celebrating our 100`h anniversary as a congregation. Since
1949 we have been in our present location and before that we were located at the corner
of LaSalle and Taylor Streets. We have been committed to the near downtown area for
our entire existence. We hope to maintain that commitment, but cannot promise to do so
if property immediately adjacent to ours is designated historic and therefore subject to
preservation.
We ask that the Historic Preservation Commission recommend that the Chapin Park
Historic District ordinance by amended to exclude the half block in question from the
proposed district by re -drawing the southern boundary to coincide with Marion Street.
It is my intent to attend your meeting scheduled for October 18th to request the
commission to recommend modification of the proposed ordinance.
Please share this correspondence with other members of the commission.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,.-. ,}
_ - .moi
Geo6ey I. wman
Past preside t of Temple Beth -El
