KENDALL
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
July 9, 2004
John Oxian
President
Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County
125 S. Lafayette Blvd.
South Bend, IN 46601
RE: Studebaker Area A Environmental Review
Dear Mr. Oxian:
The City of South Bend has undertaken a major redevelopment project in the area
that was formerly home to the Studebaker Corporation. The Studebaker/Oliver Plow
Works Redevelopment Strategy set forth the goals for redevelopment of the area, and one
of those goals was the acquisition and demolition of the former Studebaker buildings in
Area A of the project area. Following these activities, a new industrial park will be
established on the site. Area A is bounded by Sample Street, Franklin Street, the Norfolk
Southern Railway, Kendall Street, Cotter Street, and Prairie Avenue. I have attached a
map showing Studebaker Area A and the numeric designations of the former Studebaker
buildings.
The City has previously received approval from Historic Preservation to acquire
and demolish the former South Bend Stamping plant located at 601 W. Broadway
(former Studebaker Buildings 78, 79, 80, 82, 83, 86, 93, 142,'145, 151). The City is now
seeking approval to use federal funds to redevelop the remainder of the properties located
in Area A. The following is a list of the structures in Area A proposed to be demolished,
followed by a list of those that will not be demolished.
2
o0 Structures/properties to be acquired and cleared/demolished:
5-o©, ° Cat til. 400 W.
