The current owner of the property has the original deed of the property, which
records the sale of the land from the local Indian tribe to the Schafer family. The Zeigers are descendents
of these original landowners as well as the surveyor of the original Michigan Road, now known as US 31.
Weintraut & Associates included a few other structures in the 106 Review that are not currently
local landmarks, but are certainly eligible and will be contacted regarding landmark status. These projects have
decreased the architectural significance of the buildings and occurred at unknown dates. The
Vanderbosch house, 61955 Locust Road, now has a porch that expands beyond original layout and square
column posts. The barn could be in better condition. The James Leach Farmhouse, at 18075 Roosevelt
Road has seen major stripping of architectural details from the front porch. The highly interesting carved
posts and gingerbread were removed and replaced with plain stud -like posts. The louvered shutters were
also removed. These changes occurred sometime prior to the 2000 interim survey.
3
