STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Application Number: 1999-0701-E <br />Property Location: 524 North St. Joseph Street - South Bend IN 46601 <br />Property Owner: Memorial Hospital <br />Landmark or District Designation: North St. Joseph St. Local Hist. Key Number: <br />Survey Number: none assigned <br />Statement of Significance & Historic Context <br />Seth Hammond sold all of Lot 64 to real estate man Arthur Keltner for eight -hundred - <br />dollars in March of 1904. Mr. Keltner sold the lot plus the new house he recently constructed <br />on that lot to Josiah Keltner for two -thousand -five -hundred -dollars in August of 1904. <br />Josiah Keltner rented out the house until 1907 when he sold it to Dora Schafer for <br />two -thousand -six -hundred -dollars. Miss Schafer was born in Plymouth, Indiana in 1884 and <br />eventually married Clarence Brown. She rented the house out until 1921 when the house was <br />sold to Benjamin Fetter for seven -thousand -dollars. Mr. Fetter sold the house one month <br />later to business mogul Samual M. Robinson. Mr. Robinson sold the house one year later to <br />the Workingmen's Building & Loan Association, who then sold it to Mary Snapp, the year <br />was 1925. <br />Mrs. Snapp was the widow of C. C. Snapp. She lived in the house until 1927 when it <br />was then sold to James Godshalk. During his one year ownership the house was vacant. He <br />then divided the Lot. The western half contained the house which was sold to Lulu M. <br />Gemberling in 1928. Miss Gemberling was born in Ohio in 1878, she came to South Bend by <br />way of Three Rivers, Michigan where she taught school. In South Bend she owned and <br />operated a beauty salon and rented out the house. She owned the house until 1942 when it <br />was sold to Hoy & Jeannie Carroll. <br />Mr. Carroll was employed in the maintenance department of the Tower Building. <br />They lived in the house until 1949 when they moved to Arizona. <br />Page: 1 <br />
