CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
APPLICATION —1998-0715pt.2
PROPERTY — 830 North Michigan
South Bend, IN.
OWNER — South Bend Water Works
DESIGNATION — LL
RATING — Outstanding 0/13
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
The plans for the present North Pumping Station were drawn up on August 30, 1912 by the
well known local architects, Freyermuth & Maurer. This firm preserved an earlier foundation
on the northwest side of the present structure which dates to 1892. Work on the new building
began in 1910 when a local engineer, William S. Moore, had build a 6,000,000 gallon
reinforced concrete reservoir. Freyermuth and Maurer's 1912 building was constructed for the
cost of $250,000.00 and was equipped with a 7"x175' reinforced concrete stack, a brick suction
well, 20 additional supply wells and steam pumping engines. The suction well was
subsequently replaced by a modern reservoir and the steam pumps were replaced by electricity,
thus, leaving most of the pumping station empty.
The exterior of the new pumping station is in the classical revival style, which was very
popular in the mid -west as the Prairie School Style began to fade, to make it better suit its park
surroundings. Currently the interior is divided into three parts, the old pumping room the new
pumping roof and the boiler room.
PROPOSFD CHANGE
The applicant is proposing to install a new door in the rear facade of the North pumping station.
STANDARDS
The Preservation Guidelines for Local Landmarks state:
b) ....The Guidelines for Local Landmarks follow the Rehabilitation Model....
C.
