House Addition
1121 E. Wayne North
East Wayne Historic District
NEED FOR THE ADDITION
For many years we have contemplated a kitchen renovation that would create enough
space to let our entire family sit comfortably together at the kitchen table. In addition, we
have desired a vestibule -like space at the back door with space to take on and off boots,
store coats, and act as a thermal buffer between inside and out.
The proposed addition accomplishes both of these goals with minimal changes to both
the interior and exterior of the house.
DESIGN AND MATERIALS ,
The design calls for a small two -wall addition to be added to the west side of the house,
and the reconstruction of a back porch which has severe insect damage.
The goal is to design the west addition so that it is sympathetic to the style and character
of the house. Adding to this Tudor Revival house presents many design challenges and
could easily be botched. However, this design has the following advantages:
1. The proposed addition is very small, and will be in scale with the existing house;
the addition will not project beyond the existing building lines of the house.
2. The existing house is asymmetrical and has other projections and idiosycrocies, so
this work will not disrupt or diminish the original design and feel of the home.
3. The addition does not introduce new materials, but employs materials (e.g. brick
and half-timbered stucco) which exist elsewhere on the house. The brick used in the
wainscot will be original brick from existing stock or salvaged from the existing house.
4. The addition is not on the front of the house, and can be seen only at an oblique
angle from the street and sidewalk.
f6
RJ -3 I11
