•
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT,
APPLICATION -- 1997-0908
PROPERTY -- 1724 East Wayne Street
South Bend, IN
OWNER -- Mr. and Mrs. Howell
DESIGNATION -- EW-LHD
RATING -- Contributing C/9
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE HISTORIC CONTEXT
Whitcomb and Keller built this H.R. Stapp designed Tudor Revival house in
1927. It was vacant for a year before it was purchased by Raymond and Sarah
Boner in 1929. Mr. Boner was a typist for Studebaker Corp. In 1931 the Boner
family sold the house to Cecil M. and Electa L. Sennett. Cecil Sennett was a
physician with offices in the Sherland Building. The house continued to
exchange hands on a relatively regular basis until the current owners. Mr. and
Mrs. Howell purchased the property in 1993.
PROPOSED CHANGE
Applicant proposes to replace rear prime door with similar steel door same
lite pattern to resemble existing wood door.
STANDARDS
The Preservation Guidelines for East Wayne Street state:
b).:..The Guidelines for the East Wayne Street District follow the
Rehabilitation Model....
TI.C.1 Required
Original windows and doors, including sash, lintels, sills, shutters .....
shall*be retained or when deteriorated beyond repair, replaced with units and
trim resembling the original.
II.C.3 Prohibited
Original windows, doors and hardware shall not be discarded when they can be
restored and reused in place. Inappropriate new window or door features such
as aluminum insulating glass combinations that require removal of original
windows and doors may not be installed.
RECOMMENDATION
The owner proposes to replace an existing rear entry door which is not visible
from the public thoroughfare with a new entry door. The door to be removed is
a wood "Dutch door" which may have been fabricated using the upper portion of
a standard six panel door as its lower section with a 9 lite window Panel as
the upper section. This might also be a factory or mill design for such a
sectionally divided door. The replacement door is to be an embossed metal
insulated door with a glass with two vertical panels below and a window panel
above with a 9 lite wood grill insert. Being in a discreet location and
providing nominal similarity of design the Staff recommends approval of the
replacement door in this instance.
DBD
9/101/97
