•
•
•
NATIONAL REGISTER NOMINATION STAFF REPORT
The boundaries of the various plats, subdivisions and additions to the City of
Lowell were established as the subject area of the nomination presently under
consideration, although all buildings, structures, sites, and objects included
in the nomination are from the period following annexation. These properties
range from a vernacular house constructed in the mid 1870s which still
evidences strong influences of the Greek Revival style prevalent of the period
of pioneer settlement to Art Moderne facades for industrial facilities from
the early 1940s. The listed properties include firehouses schools, churches,
storefront commercial buildings, industrial and manufacturing plants, private
residences, public parks, and infrastructural elements such as bridges and
brick paved streets which in aggregate retain the character, association and
feel necessary for historical recognition.
It is the opinion of HPC Staff that these districts, buildings, structures.
sites, and objects meet the criteria for eligibility for the National Register
of Historic Places. Staff recommends that the commission send a favorable
ruling to the Mayor of South Bend and to the State Historic Preservation
Office.
DBD
Director
10/15/97
c
