CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
• roofs or are covered by the main roof of the house. Columns, brick piers with
colonettes, and turned posts on pedestals support the porches.
II.D.1.) Required: Existing or original porches and steps, including
handrails, balusters, columns, brackets, tiles and roof decorations shall be
retained or replaced by replicas of the same design and materials when
deteriorated beyond repair. Porches and additions reflecting later
architectural styles, and which are important to the building's historical
integrity shall be retained.
II.D.4) Original porch details should not be replaced with materials
representing a different period or style from the original.
RECOMMENDATION
Regarding the first issue, removal of existing front stairs, it is in
compliance to the guidelines since this staircase is not original to the
house. Applicant confirmed that the door which has been cut into the side of
the house will be removed and a fixed sash landing window will be installed in
it's place. Siding over the door opening will be installed around the
proposed window to close the gap.
Regarding the second issue, to remove the existing back porch and build a new
one where a second egress will be installed. Sanborn maps indicate that the
present rear is not original to the house porch. The proposed 2 level porch
would provide code required egress from the second story and will be executed
in compatible style with the rail and post design as seen in picture submitted
from 1216 L.W.E.
Staff recommends demolition approval -for the front stairs where it was
• previously inappropriately altered. Staff recommends approval to remove the
rear porch which is also not original. Proper replacement should satisfy code
requirements and be compatible with the style of neighboring houses. Staff
recommends approval of the proposed new rear porch.
C:
