Leszczynski, Director <br />October 21, 1996 <br />Historic Preservation Commission <br />1100 County -City Building <br />South Bend, Indiana <br />Attn: David Duvall <br />Executive Director <br />Re: Street Name Signs <br />Riverside Drive Historic District <br />Dear Mr. Duvall: <br />It is the intention of the Bureau of Traffic and Lighting to replace street name signs that were <br />• removed from lighting poles during restoration of the street lighting system. <br />The signs that were removed were mounted to the light poles. We do not propose to re- <br />mount them on the poles to avoid damaging these old and fragile poles further. We propose to <br />mount the signs on free-standing poles driven into the ground on the west side of Riverside at the <br />currently unidentified intersections. The poles will be galvanized steel "U" -channels with ribbed <br />backs. The signs will be the same signs that were removed, four inch high white lettering on a green <br />reflective background on a six inch blade. The posts are the same as in place in several locations in <br />the district. They are also the standard in inventory for replacement of posts in June, 1985 when the <br />Riverside Drive Historic District was designated. Likewise, the sign materials and size are the same <br />materials and sizes in use at that time. <br />Please let me know if you can issue a Certificate of Appropriateness for this administratively, <br />or if I need to petition the full commission.
