Niles Avenue
South Bend, In 46617
Dear Jack Roberts:
625 East Riverside Drive
South Bend, In 46601
October 14, 1996
As twenty -five-year residents of East Riverside Drive, we were surprised
last winter to see your hospital springing up across the river. We lived through
the noisy months of construction. Now we have the glaring security lights that
hit us once and then again as they are reflected in the water.
It seems like a top-heavy building, too large for the narrow piece of ground
that'it occupies. The river bank seems an unlikely place for such a facility,
judging from at least two situations at your East Race Hospital where disoriented
patients had to be rescued from the water.
• I hope the rumor is unfounded that you plan to remove the trees between your
building and the river. This will co.; Lely destroy the ecology of the river
bank, a spot which, until recently, was part of the territory of a great horned
owl, and which, until recently, was the nesting spot for a pair of great blue
herons. It seems to us that you have done enough damage without destroying any
more trees.
Do you understand the immense valt to the city and community of such a nat-
ural river corridor? Are you at all sensitive to the impact you have already made
on your neighbors as well as the hundreds of birds and other forms of wildlife in
this area that struggle to maintain themselves along this river? We hope that you
are. And we expect a reply. We expect to know, specifically, whether or not you
plan to remove these trees.
Sincerely yours,
• Julie and Dennis White
VX,
GLA -1
