0
NATIONAL REGISTER NOMINATION STAFF REPORT
Though often somewhat cosmetically altered, the housing has retained its
streetscape character. Reflecting the typical pattern book house styles of the
era, the neighborhood is especially interesting for its collection of a wide
gable -front style of house not common elsewhere in the city and a high
concentration of modest cross -gable type houses with Queen Anne features,
especially soffits which return around corners at the gable facing the street.
Several noteworthy brick bungalows with distinctive detailing are scattered
through the neighborhood.
It is the opinion of HPC Staff that this district meets the criteria for
eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. Staff recommends
that the commission send a favorable ruling to the Mayor of South Bend and to
the State Historic Preservation Office.
DBD
Director
5/14/96
•
•
