Paint removal should be considered only where there is paint surface deterioration and as part of an overall maintenance program which involves repainting or applying other appropriate protective coatings. Coatings such as paint help protect the wood from moisture and ulrraviolet light and stripping the wood bare will expose the surface to the effects of weathering. 8. Damaged or deteriorated paint should be removed to the next sound layer using the mildest method possible. 9. Propane or butane torches, sandblasting, water blasting or other abrasive cleaning and/or paint removal methods shall not be permitted. Doing so changes the visual quality of the Nvood and accelerates deterioration. • 10. Repainting should be based on paint seriation studies. If an adequate record does not exist repainting shall be done with colors that are appropriate to the style and period of the buildutg. D.
