1093 Riverside Drive
• South Bend, IN 46616
March 30, 1996
David Duvall
Historic Preservation Commission
1123 County -City Building
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear David,
Enclosed is an Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness
for exterior landscaping at 1093 Riverside Drive in the Riverside
Drive Local Historic District.
In our meeting earlier this month, I gave you copies of the two
landscaping plans we are considering. The first was prepared by
David Barncourt of Landscapes Unlimited; the second by Garry
Roberson of McKinley Terrace Garden Center. We like elements of
both, and may choose to adopt some parts of each plan. In either
case, this is something we intend to do gradually, over a period of
several years. You may see a series of C of A applications, from us.
• Initial steps we would like to take a e are these.
Front vard.
1) Trim the overhanging branches of the silver maple on the
adjoining property at 1095 Riverside, as recommended in the
Barncourt plan. We have consulted with the McDonnells and they
are in full support of this. This trimming is needed to give more light
to the existing dogwood tree at the northeast corner in front of our
house.
2) Move the small (5') plum tree which is along the front
sidewalk, near 1095. This tree needs much more light if it is to
flourish. We would like to move it to the sunny spot recommended
by Dave Barncourt, closer to the house and on the other side of the
front yard, near 1091. If it survives the move we may plant a few
small shrubs, such as goldflame spirea, to surround it.
We have a secondary purpose in wishing to move the plum
• tree. The large silver maple on our property is not in good condition
