DHPA Grant Cycle 1995
9-28-94
PROPOSAL SUMMARY
Project: Northern Indiana College/South Bend Chilled Plow - National Register
Nomination
DHPA Priority Area: Architectural/Historical
Project Description:
Review and expand on the description and history found in the current survey
card of the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Survey and perform
additional research and documentation as required to meet the requirements of
a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The project will
further include the preparation of the necessary forms for submission of the
National Register nomination.
Comments:
This structure which was constructed as terminus to the West Washington
corridor, the "mansion row" of late nineteenth century South Bend. Following
the failure of the educational institution it was converted to industrial use
and received additions for this purpose.
Our preliminary judgment is that the nomination should emphasize Criteria
"C", focusing on the style, scale, and rarity of the subject structure and its
building type. Secondary emphasis may focus on Criteria "A" as representing a
trends (event) in the development of education, commerce, industry, and the
expansion of the city and its plan.
David B. Duvall, Director - Historic Preservation Commission page 9
