historicpreservation commission of south bend and st. joseph county,
• ROOM 1123 COUNTY CITY BUILDING
south bend, indiana 46601 (219) 284-9798
February 5, 1986
Mr. John Leszczynski, President
Board of Public Works
13th floor County/City Building
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear John:
As you know, in 1985 Riverside Drive from Lafayette to Angela Blvd. was designated
a local district. The area is a cohesive, intact early twentieth century neighborhood
and its residents are committed to retaining its historic characteristics.
Although the district has several styles of historic streetlights, they blend with the
many historic architectural styles which are represented. In the last year, some
of the historic lights have been replaced with fiberglass poles and contemporary
luminaires at the following locations:
• 1. the southwest corner of Riverside Drive and Park Avenue
2. on the north side of Riverside Drive in front of 962 Riverside
3. on the north side of Riverside across the street from 1007
4. on the north side of Riverside across from 1025.
Mr. Joe Pluta, of your office, indicated that the historic streetlights which were
recently removed from along Angela Blvd. will be stored by the city for use as
replacements in historic districts as needed. Would it be possible to have the
four fiberglass streetlights indicated above, replaced with the streetlights that
originally stood on Angela Blvd?
Please call our office if you need further information. We look forward to hearing
from you on this matter.
Sincerely,
Joann Sporleder
President
cc: Mr. Phil McDonald, I & M Electric Co.
Mr. Richard Bennett, Chairperson
Riverside Drive Historic District Liaison Committee
