JOSEPH COUNTY
SITE INSPECTION REPORT
107 Greenlawn
DATE: February 5, 1986
INSPECTOR(S): Karen K i emnec , Elizabeth straw
DESCRIPTION: The building at 107 Greenlawn consists of the original
two and a half story residence with additions of a
chapel and a novitiate, now a school, to the front of
the structure. The original residence, a Period Revival
structure built in 1909 and remodeled in 1928, is
covered with brick and has a slate roof. The additions
are of modern construction (1959) and have little or no
ornamentation. A large iron fence surrounds the
property that covers most of a city block.
• REMARKS: 107 Greenlawn, originally known as 1701 E. Jefferson,
has undergone several alterations. Major alterations
occur•ed in 1959 with the addition of the novitiate and
chapel to the front of the house. At the same time the
original residence, which was stucco, was covered with
brick to match the new additions. The staff believes
that with the exterior changes that have occured to the
building that the structure should not receive Landmark
designation. However, the current owners, the People of
Praise, should be commended for their• effort to restore
the interior and their upkeep of the exterior of the
building.
The fence that surrounds the property may be eligible
for landmark designation since there are only a few
examples of iron fences of this type in South Bend. The
fence surrounds the entire block bounded by Jefferson,
Greenlawn, Esther, and Colfax and if landmark
designation for it is sought, the entire fence should be
included. All property owners on the block would need
to be notified of the proposed designation.
•
