February 20, 1978
Page 10
and car storage, a total of $350.00. She said $800.00 was allocated
for travel this year, and since the National Trust's annual meeting
this year is in Chicago, the expenses for that won't be so high.
She then brought up another conference on the 6th and 7th of March
by the Preservation Action group in Washington to which Mrs. Price
and she would like to go. Discussion ensued as to the merits of
attending; a conference of what was essentially a lobbying group. Mrs.
Price was prepared to ask for $100.00 with the stipulation that any
other expenses would come out of her own pocket. Ms. Peck asked for
$162.00 for the trip to Washington, but then withdrew her request. Mrs.
Price then urged that Mr. Oxian go to the Preservation Action confer-
ence. Mr. Wasielewski then proposed that Mrs. Price be granted $100.
to go to Washington and he also made a motion that Ms. Peck, if chosen,
be granted $350.00 to go to Galveston. Ms. Sporleder seconded this
motion. Mr. Wasielewski further said that if Mr. Oxian wished to go
to Washington, he would be allowed $100.00 also. Mrs. Price suggest-
ed that perhaps Ms. Peck could be sent to Evansville to study the pro-
gram there.
Mrs. Price further said that in March there is to be a conference for
the Main Street program for the National Trust, and someone from the
Commission ought to go to that, as well as the Landmarks Foundation
state meeting in April. Mr. Oxian suggested that perhaps a portion of
the $5,000 turned in to the county could be used for picking up the
tabs for these items. The procedure would be to go before the County
Council and make specific requests. The motion was finally put to a
vote and unanimously approved.
Ms. Peck then reported that the Commission has been asked to help with
the National Register nomination for Union Station. Mr. Don Sporleder
is going to record the visual information for the nomination form and
one of Mr. Sporleder's architectural students at N.D., John DeMarre,
is doing the historical research on that building.
The Commission was also requested by the North Shore Triangle to have
survey cards for each one of the buildings in that district and Mr.
DeMarre will also be doing those.
Ms. Peck then spoke about the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana's
tours called Your Town Past and Future. The Foundation chooses four
towns and in cooperation with Ball State does a tour of commercial or
downtown areas. They are looking for towns to do this in in the north-
ern part of Indiana. A letter must be written saying the Commission
has an interest in this. The Landmark's staff person who was contacted
did not know if they would take on a residential district or two - like
the North Shore Triangle and the West Washington districts. Mr. Oxian
then made a motion that this matter be pursued with the cooperation of
SouthAold Heritage Foundation. Mr. Nimtz seconded this motion. This
motion was unanimously approved.
Ms. Peck said the question of books and subscriptions would be covered
at the next meeting.
Mrs. Price informed the Commission that J. Reid Williamson will be
coming to South Bend the latter part of the week, and she would like
to make the opportunity for any Commission member to talk to him.
